How to Make Delicious Falafel at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

Falafel is a beloved Middle-Eastern street food that has gained popularity worldwide. Its main ingredient is chickpeas, often combined with fava beans, which are soaked overnight to ensure they are ready for use. The key to perfect falafel lies in its preparation. Start by blending feta cheese, Greek yogurt, and lemon juice in a food processor until smooth, gradually adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Drain the soaked chickpeas and pat them dry before blending them with parsley, cilantro, onion, garlic, salt, cumin, coriander, and black pepper. This mixture should form a paste, which is then shaped into balls or patties.

For a unique twist, add beetroot, sweet potato, and red onion to your falafel mix. This not only enhances the flavor but also adds nutritional value. Cooking falafel requires careful attention; they should be fried in hot oil until they reach a deep golden brown, taking about 2-3 minutes on each side. Alternatively, for a healthier version, bake them in a preheated oven at 180C for 20 minutes.

Falafel is versatile and can be served in various ways. Make a falafel bowl with rice or quinoa, topped with hummus, tahini sauce, and roasted vegetables like eggplant, bell peppers, and onions. Or, for a lighter meal, serve with cauliflower tabbouleh and an avocado, pea, and feta smash. For street-food authenticity, serve the falafel in pita bread with a generous helping of hummus and a side of parsley salad.
