Old-Fashioned Boiled Raisin Cake is topped with a delicious homemade brown sugar frosting. In a medium saucepan, mix together water, brown sugar, raisins, butter, and cocoa. Bring to a boil, and let simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, and let cool.
Pour in the boiled mixture, and stir until well blended. Mix in the eggs. Pour into the greased loaf pan. Bake for 90 minutes in the preheated oven, until a skewer or knife inserted into the top comes out clean. Cool cake in the pan for at least 10 minutes before removing.
Combine butter, milk, sugar, dates and spices in a pan, stir over heat until butter is melted, bring to boil, remove from heat, stir in soda, stand 5 minutes. Stir in lightly beaten eggs and sifted flour in two lots, mix well. Pour mixture (it will be quite thick) into a well greased 20cm ring tin, bake in a moderate oven for 40 minutes.
