Easy Homemade Braised Tilapia

Notes

Ingredients:
  • Tilapia (1 fish)
  • Garlic (4 cloves)
  • Green onions (5)
  • Soy sauce (2 tablespoons)
  • Ginger (to taste)
  • Salt (5g)
  • Sugar (5g)
  • Water (as needed)
  • White pepper powder (½ tablespoon)
  • Cooking oil (as needed)
  • Bean paste (to taste, optional)
  • Chicken essence (to taste, optional)
  • Cornstarch mixed with water (for thickening)
  • Szechuan peppercorn oil (to taste, optional)
  • Thirteen spices (to taste, optional)
Instructions:
  1. Clean the tilapia and make diagonal cuts on its surface. Season it with a mixture of salt, cooking wine, and pepper powder. Rub the mixture evenly over the fish.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add a pinch of salt to prevent sticking, and fry the tilapia until both sides are golden brown. Remove and drain the oil.
  3. In the same pan, leave some oil and sauté ginger and garlic. Add bean paste if desired, and stir-fry until fragrant. Pour in enough water and season with soy sauce, white pepper powder, and thirteen spices.
  4. Place the fish back into the pan, add chicken essence if desired, and simmer until cooked. Remove the fish onto a plate. In the remaining sauce, add water-mixed cornstarch to thicken, and add Szechuan peppercorn oil and chopped green onions. Stir well and pour over the fish.
