This makes a great king cake! To get purple, mix the blue and red colors like the recipe explains. I’ve used both the sweet orange roll dough and generic cinnamon roll dough to make this, and both cake out great. Everyone loves eating it, and it looks great too.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar, orange zest and egg yolks. Whisk in the yeast mixture. Add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients; fold with a rubber spatula until all the flour is incorporated and a slightly sticky dough forms.
It’s so easy to make colored sugar at home. Just place white sugar with a few drops of food coloring in an airtight container and shake to combine. I really do recommend buying the lemon extract though because that little hint of lemon just makes this recipe. Use lemon juice if you’re in a pinch! Where did the king cake tradition come from?
The King Cake is used in a religious tradition passed down from French influence in southern Louisiana. The ring of colorfully iced pastry is made of sweet bread served mainly on Epiphany until the day after Mardi Gras. Epiphany is a holiday honoring the event when the kings, or wise men, brought gifts to Jesus.
