One of popular desserts eaten during this festive season is Chinese New Year’s cake (nian gao 年糕), that made with sticky, glutinous rice flour (mochi flour) with brown sugar because it’s symbolic of growing taller, achieving higher every year, that signifies a prosperous year awaiting ahead.
To bake a cake for New Year’s Eve is one of my favorite traditions I grew up with. The New Year’s celebration is supposed to last all night; therefore there is a need for lots of food, cake and plenty of drinks.
The familiar image of a New Year Sweet Rice Cake (红糖年糕), or nian gao, is a welcome sight during Chinese New Year. Nian gao 年糕 symbolizes progress, advancement, and growth.
This Greek cake, which contains a hidden coin, is served on New Year’s Day. According to tradition, whoever finds the coin will have good luck for a year. This over-the-top, 20-layer cake is as beautiful as it is boozy. Don’t forget to serve with plenty of champagne.
